NORWAY & THE NORTHERN LIGHTS CRUISE

There’s no better way to experience their iridescent beauty than from the deck of one of P&O's wonderful cruise ships. Aurora Borealis is most likely to be visible between September and April, so this type of cruise is made for winter months, giving you the best chance to view Mother Nature's very own light show. And to add to the spectacle, you can also marvel at Norway’s mighty fjords.

NO TIPS REQUIRED

No tipping is needed on P&O ships, so you can relax knowing good service and good times are all part and parcel of your P&O Cruises holiday.

Day 01: Board P&O Arcadia in Southampton, UK

On Arcadia you will find comfortable theatre-style-seating arcs around the stage in three tiers, affording you excellent views of the stage. In The Palladium, the drama is not confined to the stage, as the décor adds a theatrical touch of its own. A rich colour scheme of royal blue, violet, midnight blue and silver sets off the main attraction - the shows themselves! Suede and crushed velvet adds an opulent touch, ensuring The Palladium has all the magic and anticipation of the West End!

Day 02-03: Days at Sea

Looming all around are the mighty Romsdal Alps, which might be thick with snow or still basking in an autumn glow, depending on the time of your cruise. Venture beyond the charming shops and markets of Åndalsnes on the snaking Troll’s Road to Trollveggen (Troll Wall). At nearly 1,100m, it’s the highest vertical drop in Northern Europe, the scene of many daredevil climbs and base jumps. Another way to see the Troll Wall (and even more dramatic Alpine scenery besides) is to take the Rauma Railway steam train which leaves from a station right by the cruise port.

Day 04: Andalsnes, Norway

Whitewall Galleries offer a wide range of artwork from leading contemporary artists as well as 20th Century masters. During your cruise there will be a range of informative seminars, exciting exhibitions and exclusive VIP events for you to attend. When you purchase any on board credit goes towards your painting and there are easy delivery options available. For a flavour of what we offer search for WhitewallatSea on social media.

Day 05: Day at Sea

The best way to see its full glory is to take a cable car 480 metres up to the top of Mount Storsteinen, which affords spectacular views out over the city to the surrounding mountains. You’re just 400km from the Arctic Circle in Tromsø, but there’s no need to get out your polar gear. Thanks to its position on the Gulf Stream, this lively city (said to have the greatest number of bars per capita in Norway) is relatively mild for its latitude.

If you're fascinated by the world of snow and ice, the city's Polaria Science Museum is the place to find out all about it. Within its iceberg-shaped walls, you can meet the local wildlife at a vast aquarium, experience an Arctic snowstorm or take a virtual trek through the frozen wilderness to encounter polar bears and see the mystical Northern Lights.

Day 06 - 07: Tromso, Norway

Take the cable car up Fagernesfjellet mountain by day and enjoy the stunning views of the region from 670 metres. Or if the conditions and your itinerary permit, you can ascend at night to observe the spectacular Northern Lights from the same lofty vantage point.

The sights indoors are also impressive. The Museum Nord is housed in a handsome brick building erected in 1902 and gives insight into the town's brief but intriguing history, while the new War Museum tells the story of Narvik's key role in WWII via interactive exhibits.

Fancy visiting two countries in one day and seeing amazing sights along the way? The 43km-long Ofoten Railway line from Narvik to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland is one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world.

Narvik boasts especially clear skies so a visit here will offer a good chance to experience those mesmerising Northern Lights.

Day 08 - 09: Narvik, Norway

Think luxurious spaces to relax in, salon treatments and the aroma of scented oils. You can enjoy a warming and cleansing visit to the sauna and steam rooms. Or opt for the very latest in facials, manicures, pedicures, aromatherapy or massages, in one of the luxurious treatment rooms.

Day 10: Day at Sea

Your ship will dock right next to Gamle Stavanger, the old quarter, with its collection of 200-year-old white-painted wooden cottages (considered national heritage monuments in their own right), 12th century cathedral modelled on Winchester Cathedral, markets, craft stores and art galleries.

Breathtaking natural beauty, crashing waterfalls and head-spinning vertical drops (600m from the flat-topped Pulpit Rock or Preikestolen) can also be found about Stavanger. For an equally dramatic but less perilous photo op, head for the Swords in Rock or Sverd i Fjell monument at the edge of town, commemorating the 872 battle of Hafrsfjord, which led the victor, King Harald Fairhair, to create Norway as one kingdom. Three vast bronze swords stand firm in the rock at the water’s edge. Then head to find out about more Viking antics in Stavanger’s Museum of Archaeology.

Day 11: Stavanger, Norway

Our libraries on each ship are stacked with a wide selection of fiction genres and fascinating non-fiction books. So why not spend your day with your nose buried in a great book?
